Education Recruitment Trade Mission to Germany

Munich and Berlin October 26 to 30, 2010

The Canadian Embassy in Germany, in collaboration with Languages Canada, is pleased to invite the participation of K-12 schools, accredited language schools and post-secondary institutions on an education recruitment mission to Germany. The mission will provide a plaform for education sector representatives to meet with German organizations responsible for sending high school, language and post-secondary students to Canada. Establishing relationships with key German officials will lead to an increased number of German students coming to Canada.

The Trade Mission to Germany will include roundtable sessions with experts on the German education system and German recruiting professionals as well as networking events in Munich and Berlin with German organizations. The Trade Mission will take place from October 26 to 30 in Germany, and is being organized prior to the 2010 ICEF Berlin Workshop (October 31 to November 3, 2010) where representatives from Canadian education institutions will have the opportunity to meet with German study abroad/ travel agencies.

Date and Location: Munich: October 26 – 27, 2010 and Berlin: October 28 – 30, 2010

Eligibility: Further to the Brand Use Eligibility Policy jointly established by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) and the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), K-12 and post-secondary education institutions are invited to consult the provincial lists of eligible institutions on the « Imagine Education au/in Canada, Brand Use Guidelines » site at http://www.imagine.cmec.ca/en/zone/ to confirm their eligibility to participate in promotion events.

Languages Canada members are eligible to participate in the event.

Cost: See attached program of activities for greater detail. $ 2,300 CDN includes 5 nights of hotel accommodations from October 25 to 30, meals, presentations, meeting arrangements, transfers and airfare from Munich to Berlin. Flight to and from Germany and incidentals are extra.

Market Overview: Germany has the largest economy in the European Union and the third largest in the world. Germany is Canada's seventh-largest export market and ranks fifth among Canada's suppliers. Canada's bilateral trade with Germany has grown considerably in the past decade: Canadian imports from Germany rose from $3.83 billion in 1990 to $11.5 billion in 200, while Canadian exports rose from $2.20 billion in 1990 to $3.88 billion in 2007.

Germany is a major player in the global higher education marketplace, hosting over 233,606 international students in 2008. The total number of higher education students, both domestic and international is 1,941,405. German students are among the most mobile students internationally. In 2006, the number of German students abroad had reached 83,000. The top 5 destinations for German students were the Netherlands (13,988), United Kingdom (12,145), Austria (11,961), Switzerland (8,868) and the United States (8,656). Canada ranks in 9th place with 1,700 students originating from Germany.
