Languages Canada Hosts Another Successful Annual Conference
"Better Together - Connecting to Thrive in a Competitive World " was the theme of the 2010 Languages Canada conference which took place March 8-10, 2010 in St. John's, Newfoundland. The conference highlighted the initiatives which help increase the recognition of the association and its members and create a greater awareness of quality English and French language training in Canada.
Highlights included presentations on the next steps in international marketing, a forum on working with Saudi Arabian students, a presentation by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau, and great discussions on testing. The overall feeling this year was one of optimism, and attendees took advantage of the Newfoundland traditions and hospitality.
The two day event gave an opportunity for Languages Canada members and special invitees to meet and discuss common issues and express concerns and opportunities for the Canadian language training industry. The discussion
groups included Advocacy, Marketing and Promotion, Quality Assurance, and each of the various special interest groups (French, University and College Language Programs and Private Language Schools). New this year, and a reflection of its importance, was the creation of the Immigration Subcommittee (part of the Advocacy Committee) and a Strategic Planning Session held by board members following the AGM.
A new slate of directors was presented and approved at the Annual General Meeting. The Board of Directors for 2010 - 2011 is comprised of 16 dedicated and passionate individuals from the Private and Public sectors and represents both French and English programs.
The Languages Canada Board of Directors and staff are looking forward to the 2011 event in Montreal and in working with members and stakeholders to ensure Languages Canada is the voice of the language training sector in Canada and internationally.
