Minister Ed Fast Announces Ongoing Funding for Associations
Today, Languages Canada president Sharon Curl was on location to welcome an announcement of more than $2.6M in funding under the Global Opportunities for Associations Funding Program (GOA) for 2012 / 2013. The announcement was made by the Hon. Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and took place at the Vancouver location of Eurocentres Canada, owned by Ms. Curl. The University of British Columbia's English Language Institute, also an accredited member program of Languages Canada, was represented by Andrew Scales, its Academic Director.
Languages Canada promotes quality English and French language education nationally and internationally and has been a successful GOA applicant for the past seven years. "GOA funding helped the association increase the export revenue for the Canadian language education sector (ESL and FSL) by almost 10% in the past year and in the process created additional employment opportunities for Canadians and contributed $1.8 billion in export revenues to the economy. This is a clear example of a program that yields results" stated Gonzalo Peralta, Executive Director of Languages Canada. In 2011, Languages Canada members welcomed nearly 150,000 international students in its 170 member programs across the country. Language education in Canada is a strategic and key enabler in education, labour, and immigration.
Global Opportunities for Associations provides the financial support that allows associations and their members expand market penetration and exploration. This in turn has allowed the language education sector to open new markets and create new opportunities in established markets around the world.
Languages Canada received $80,000 through GOA for two packages in the coming year: to promote Canadian French language education through student recruitment fairs and events in Brazil, Mexico and the United States; and to further develop markets in Brazil and Saudi Arabia by organizing missions to attract international students to study in Canada.
Languages Canada is a member-based organization representing French and English language education programs throughout the country. Membership is limited to programs, both public and private, which meet the rigorous standards of the association and who are committed to upholding them. The internationally recognized quality assurance program is comprehensive, rigorous and covers the areas of: curriculum, teacher qualifications, student services, student admissions, marketing, promotion, facilities and administration. Languages Canada is a member of the Canadian Consortium for International Education Marketing (CCIEM), which represents the university, college, K-12, and language education sectors.
