A Resounding Success: A Look Back at ICEF Berlin 2016

MONTREAL, October 28, 2016 - On October 27, the third edition of the Exchange Forum on French as a Second and Foreign Language was held at the LaSalle College of Montreal. The event drew approximately forty private- and public-sector stakeholders involved in teaching French as a second language, Languages Canada members and non-members, as well representatives from the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur, the Ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie and Francophone representatives from Canada and abroad.

OTTAWA, October 20, 2016 - This week, Languages Canada Executive Director, Gonzalo Peralta, spoke to UK-based publication, StudyTravel Magazine, about the association's activities, government lobbying and market trends. He commented on the association’s efforts to ensure that Canada remains competitive compared to other language learning destinations, the results from the 2015 LC Annual Survey to members and the upcoming trade missions for 2016-17. He concludes by saying that without a pan-Canadian approach to international education, student numbers will decline.

The study, conducted by Roslyn Kunin and Associates (RKA), assesses the economic impact of international students studying in Canada. The sections titled “Languages Canada Short Term Students” were based on numbers provided by Languages Canada thanks to our annual survey of member programs.

Languages Canada wins CPIEA award

OTTAWA, October 3, 2016 - The Annual Canadian Premier International Education Awards (CPIEAs), which celebrate those who have an impact on international education, took place on the evening of September 22, 2016 in Ottawa, Ontario. Languages Canada was recognized specifically for its efforts to represent its 220 members who generate $1.5 billion in export revenue for the economy, for supporting Syrian refugees with 15,500 donated study weeks from members, and for showcasing Canada as the top destination for English and French language education.

Our Executive Director, Gonzalo Peralta, was joined by 110 international education industry leaders and delegates from Canada and around the world at the CPIEA Gala and was presented with this prestigious award. Mr. Peralta was recognized on behalf of Languages Canada in the Educational Association category.

Quebec Facilitates the Exploitation of Foreign Students

MONTREAL, September 29, 2016 - With its outdated and overly permissive laws, the government of Quebec has allowed the unprincipled operation of second language schools that exploit the vulnerability of foreign students.

“In Quebec, it is all too easy to take advantage of international students”, explains Gonzalo Peralta, Executive Director of Languages Canada, adding,” While some provinces corrected the problem years ago, Quebec is unfortunately in last place in this regard. This translates into more and more students getting duped when they come to Quebec.”

Languages Canada honours commitment to protect students at member programs

VANCOUVER , September 1, 2016 – A large Vancouver language school, Vancouver English Centre (VEC), closed its doors last Friday leaving many international language students stranded. Although VEC was no longer a member of Languages Canada (LC) at the time of closure, the association will do everything in its power to place students who registered before June 28, 2016 into other Vancouver accredited language schools.

Languages Canada applauds PM's decision to lift visa requirements for Mexico

OTTAWA, June 29, 2016 – Languages Canada applauds Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s move to lift its visa requirements for travellers from Mexico as of Dec. 1, 2016. The Prime Minister announced the news following his bilateral talks with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in Ottawa on Tuesday. Sharon Curl, President of Languages Canada, attended a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the President of Mexico on Tuesday.
