International ESL students, regardless of their background or country of origin, are welcome to come to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to experience a Canadian experience while they study English. Sault Ste. Marie (SSM), with a population of 75,000 residents, is an ideal location – a town small in size, yet BIG for its quality of life experience! 

ESL@Algoma is open to all non-native speakers of English who have a serious desire to improve their language skills and/or prepare for academic study. It offers two types of programs:

1. English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP)

  • Earn academic credits toward your degree
  • Languages Canada accredited
  • Experienced, trained staff certified by either TESL Ontario or TESL Canada
  • Five levels of programs including a Beginners Program (Level 1) and a Bridging Program (Level 5)
  • 14 weeks to complete each level
  • 24-30 hours of instruction per week
  • Small class size (5-15 students in class)
  • An integrated skills approach for listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and research skills development
  • Personalized instruction for various academic streams (i.e. business, computer science, humanities & social sciences)
  • Options to audit academic classes
  • ESL instructors work collaboratively to meet the needs of students both inside and outside the classroom
  • Extensive individual attention given to all students including one-to-one tutorials
  • Up-to-date online technologies integrated into all classes to enrich learning and increase student engagement
  • Fun cultural outings throughout the semester
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Placement test upon arrival to determine appropriate level of study.

2. Short-Term ESL Program (STEP)

Short-Term ESL Program (STEP) is an ideal option for all non-native speakers of English who would like to spend 3-6 weeks improving their English skills while enjoying sports, volunteer work and/or a variety of recreational and cultural activities in an immersive environment in the beautiful surroundings of Northern Ontario.

ESL@Algoma has the expertise to offer a customized program ranging from three to six weeks for international clients and partners with specific focuses on:

  • Volunteerism
  • Leadership and team management
  • Canadian business and entrepreneurship
  • Canadian fine arts and indigenous arts
  • Professional English language training (for working professionals)
