Minister Mendicino announces additional measures to support international students

Languages Canada welcomes yesterday's announcement by Minister Marco Mendicino that IRCC will begin issuing conditional study permit acceptance to international students who, while in their home country, enroll in online programs with designated Canadian education institutions.

The measure will provide international students with the confidence they need to register with Canadian institutions now to begin their studies online from their home country with a degree of assurance that they will be allowed to enter Canada once borders reopen.

The announcement comes after months of advocacy efforts by Languages Canada staff and individual members on behalf of Canadian international language education providers and will allow thousands of students to register and begin their Canadian education pathway programs.

“I would like to thank Minister Mendicino for this new policy announcement, to acknowledge all Languages Canada members who contributed to this campaign, as well as Canadian education representative bodies who also advocated for this important step in the right direction,” said Gonzalo Peralta, Languages Canada’s Executive Director.

Languages Canada thanks all members who helped spread the message that conditional study permit acceptance is essential. Our coordinated effort has helped to secure a measure that will contribute significantly to the recovery of Canada’s international language education sector.
