International Youth Internship Program

Here’s an opportunity for LC members who work with outbound mobility. The government of Canada, through Global Affairs Canada, offers two flagship programs that provide Canadian youth with the opportunity to undertake internships abroad, while contributing to the advancement of Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy. Multiple opportunities are available. They vary by their target audience (youth aged 19 to 30, and Indigenous youth aged 18 to 35), and by area of work, including: human dignity (health, education, and nutrition); growth that works for everyone (sustainable agriculture, environment and climate action); inclusive governance; and gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

  1. The International Youth Internship Program (IYIP) gives Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to apply their knowledge, gain international work experience and develop skills in various sectors through an internship in the field of international development.

The IYIP is part of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment and Skills Strategy. It is designed to offer Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience through international development work.

International youth internships consist of a minimum six-month period spent abroad supporting sustainable international development initiatives implemented by 12 Canadian organizations in partnership with local organizations across 45 countries.

In order to qualify, Canadian youth must be between the ages of 19 to 30, and be post-secondary graduates: graduates of a degree or diploma program in a university, college, post-secondary school of technology, post-secondary institute or a CEGEP (general and vocational college).

The current IYIP (2018-2022) aims to offer internship opportunities to more than 1200 youth across Canada. Additional information on the program is available on the following web page: canada.ca/international-youth-internship-program

  1. The International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative provides Indigenous Canadian youth with the tools and opportunities for professional development through an internship experience in a developing country.

The IAYI initiative offers Indigenous Canadian youth the opportunity to participate in internships abroad to gain professional experience in international development and acquire the skills and knowledge that will prepare them for future employment or to further their studies.

Internships are offered through eight Canadian organizations, in partnership with local organizations across 16 countries. They last a minimum of three months abroad and include pre-departure preparation training and re-integration training.

In order to qualify, Canadian youth must be between the ages of 18 and 35, have an Aboriginal affiliation, and possess a secondary school diploma (or equivalent certification).

The 2018-2023 IAYI initiative aims to offer internship opportunities to more than 500 youth across Canada. Additional information on the program is available on the following web page: canada.ca/international-aboriginal-youth-internships
